Revival of Paper: Booklets and Textbooks in Collaborative Classroom Networks

Revival of Paper: Booklets and Textbooks in Collaborative Classroom Networks
The use of paper-based materials in online or blended classrooms is exploding, not disappearing as previously predicted for the electronic age. Why is this counter-inutuitive trend occurring? This paper will present a theoretical discussion on the role of paper in blended language learning environments. Based on a three year case study across two Japanese universities, the author investigates how paper was used as an integrated (not parallel) tool or interface to various activities presented face-to-face and online. Using a qualitative analysis procedure, three different modes of paper-based media emerged that teachers configured for their activities:
1. Booklets of forms and handouts created by the teacher
2. Commercially-published textbooks with online components
3. Self-published textbooks using Lulu or other online printing systems
Photos of student use of paper, samples of each mode and the reasons for use, as articulated by teachers, will be presented. Finally, another interesting trend was observed—the “blended task”. In each site, teachers often constructed tasks which switched repeatedly between a paper-based form, face-to-face interaction, and online publishing or referencing. This unusual development was analysed using a socio-cultural framework called actor-network theory. The conclusion of this study is that the use of paper was not only increasing in the case study environments, but also that the design, operation, and ownership of the materials was changing due to changes in technological flexibility and open rules for materials exchange. Implications for classroom teaching of foreign languages will be outlined and comments by participants encouraged.

池谷さんのお話なら読んでみてもよいかな、と目をつけた本。未購入。
池谷さんの『進化しすぎた脳』はものすごく面白かった。脳の話はもともと好きな方だけど、語り口かなぁ。こんな風に専門のことをしゃべれるのはよいなぁ、と思った。
トメさんの漫画作品では、ええと『しろのあお』だな、読んだのは。これも面白かった。

RIDEBACK - カサハラテツロー
８巻ぐらいまで出てたと思う。近所の本屋でも見かけたと相方が言うので、とりあえず試しに１~４巻だけご購入。ライドバックという乗り物がけっこう新鮮。主人公のりんのふわふわした感じが、ライドバックの動きと相性よし、絵的に。
ライドバックとは、おんぶしてもらう（背中に乗る＝ride on (one's) back）ような格好で乗るマシンのこと。基本はバイクで、手足がついているというか。しゃがんだり、つかんだり、とんだり出来る。マシンの設定については、巻末にこんな感じのメモがついている（↓）。愛を感じます。
近未来（２０２０年）と「学園紛争」の話のマッチングにも「へえ」と思った。学園紛ねぇ・・・さすがに実体験はないしなぁ。このマッチングが面白いかどうかは、全体でどういう話に展開させるか次第かな。ちょっと保留。

山岸亮子さん、バレエ以外も描くんだ～と思って思わず買っちゃいました。
「白眼子」「鳥向楽」「天沼矛」の3作を収録。とはいえ、「白眼子」が全体の2/3を占めているので、「白眼子」+ オマケって感じ。濃ゆいのかあっさりしてるのか・・・なんとも言えないお話でした。好きだけど。

『絶望～』は揃えなかったけど、山田玲司の頃のエコ系はけっこう面白い。
「エコエコパンドラ」とか（・・・『絶望～』前は知らないけど）。
本作は、「エコって何？」な民雄くんと、地球を救える大発明のデータを奪われ、殺されかかってすっかりやさぐれちゃったウサギ（！）が主人公。けっこう爆弾発言ぽくても民雄くんとウサギ博士のおかげでオブラートに包まれている（？）
「この話の一部はフィクションではありません」・・・このセンスが好き。

Abstract
: Having applied an open-source LMS to about two thousand on-screen English exams for required courses that are part of the Universit di Milano's computer science short-degree program, the authors report on some of the interesting effects of using such a system. Large class size led to the adoption of an LMS designed for distance learning as a platform for automated test marking. A greater sense of belonging among students has resulted. Upon completion of a test, students immediately see where they stand vis--vis the group at large, and students who have not attended class can be brought into the system/community.

Language Learning Strategies in Independent Settings
2005年のロケットボーイズ 五十嵐貴久
『2005年のロケットボーイズ』、面白かった！気持ちいい！☆☆☆☆☆
五十嵐作品は初だったけれど、XX年シリーズということで、すでに２作出ている：『1985年の奇跡 』『１９９５年のスモーク･オン･ザ・ウォーター』。また好きな作家さんが見つかりました。
普通の（ではないかな）高校生たちが、ひょんなことから小型人工衛星キューブサットを作ることになってしまったお話（KKS-1プロジェクトとか、若者たちのプロジェクトはけっこうあるみたい。ほおお）。どう考えても実現不可能でしょ・・・という感じなのだが。
なんというか、彼らは、ものすごく頑張る。粘る。なんでそこまで頑張ったのか、「振り返って考えてみてもよくわからない。でも、結局は面白かったからやっていたのだと思う」（主人公君談）。そうだよね～面白くないとね～。
若者がロケットに挑戦する『夏のロケット』を思い出した。こちらはもう少し挑戦が正統派っぽかったような・・・ん？思い出したとか言いつつ、覚えていないか・・・とにかく、面白かったことは確か。も1回読みましょうかね。

今回は、結局4,5冊同時並行で読むことになった。本屋で、この本（↓）が目についたから・・・てわけではない（たぶん。買ってないし）。
本は10冊同時に読め!―本を読まない人はサルである!生き方に差がつく「超並列」読書術 (知的生きかた文庫)

この頃さすがに一気読みがきつくなった。というか、読み終わるまで読むのをやめないという習慣を直しておかないと、まずいでしょやっぱり。というわけで「途中でやめる」練習をスタート。仕事帰りに買う。電車で読む。家でもちょっと読む。朝は読まない。でも帰りになんか買ってしまう。電車で読む・・・をやっていたら同時並行になってしまった。
けっこう、いけるかも。半分まで読んだ本の続きを読み始めるとき、脳みそが慣れない仕事で一生懸命になっている気がする（気のせいかね）。なんといっても「思い出す」作業はものすごく苦手だからな、私。
五十嵐作品は初だったけれど、XX年シリーズということで、すでに２作出ている：『1985年の奇跡 』『１９９５年のスモーク･オン･ザ・ウォーター』。また好きな作家さんが見つかりました。
普通の（ではないかな）高校生たちが、ひょんなことから小型人工衛星キューブサットを作ることになってしまったお話（KKS-1プロジェクトとか、若者たちのプロジェクトはけっこうあるみたい。ほおお）。どう考えても実現不可能でしょ・・・という感じなのだが。
なんというか、彼らは、ものすごく頑張る。粘る。なんでそこまで頑張ったのか、「振り返って考えてみてもよくわからない。でも、結局は面白かったからやっていたのだと思う」（主人公君談）。そうだよね～面白くないとね～。
